Sri Lanka’s Hangmen ⁣⁣

Sri Lanka has recruited two hangmen to carry out four executions following the president’s announcement that they are to face the death penalty. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
President Maithripala Sirisena has ended a 43-year moratorium on capital punishement as he approves the death warrants for the four convicted of drug offenses. It is said that the executioners received full training after being selected from more than a 100 applicants. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
During a visit to the Philippines in January, President Sirisena praised President Rodrigo Duterte, for his campaign against drugs, calling it “an example to the world.”⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The policy is inspired by the Philippines’ war on drugs which has seen thousands of people being killed during encounters with police and has been internationally criticized. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Political analysts believe the move will boost President Sirisena standing in the lead-up to the election due to take place at the end of this year.  The move has been widely condemned by the UN, EU and Amnesty International.⁣⁣
