Sri Lanka Easter Attack (1)

At around 8:45 am local time, 8 bombing attacks struck 3 churches and 3 hotels across the island from Batticaloa to Colombo. So far no group has claimed responsibility but the suicide attacks have claimed the lives of 189 according to the National Hospital of Sri Lanka. 11 were foreigners and children have been reported killed in the explosions. The Government has shut down access to social media and a nationwide curfew has been imposed from 6pm to 6am. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Sri Lanka has a history of persecuting its minorities with the Tamil speaking people being subjected to genocide currently under investigation by a UN war crimes panel and temples, churches, and mosques have been vandalised and worshippers harassed in a country which gives foremost place to Buddhism in its constitution.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
However, the ferocity of recent attacks have not been seen on the island in this scale even during the civil war, where the Tamil tigers fought for an independent nation for the islands persecuted Tamil minority.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
While the scale of the attack is unprecedented, it is sadly just an escalation of an island already unsafe for its minorities.⁣⁣
