India Elections 2019

The results of the world’s largest election will be decided tomorrow with Narendra Modi’s BJP party looking to return for a second term. ⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
Prime Minister Modi has been a dominant yet divisive figure. Despite vowing to improve the economy, he has failed to provide economic opportunities. Farmers’ situations are as meek as ever with thousands of farmers committing suicide year on year. Adding to this, demonetisation drive initiated by the BJP, failed to uncover ‘black money’ and cost India 1.5m jobs. ⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
BJP’s alignment with the Hindutva nationalist agenda has increased attacks on minorities. Many activists and editors fear that another term of Modi will only make India less secular and more intolerant.⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
While Indian National Congress, a party is aiming to regain the power it had in previous decades, exit polls are showing that it is highly likely Modi will be in power once again. In the hours leading up to results, we’ll be working with @southasia_lse to keep you informed.
