Bangladesh government announces lockdown

World Health Organization has asked Bangladesh to consider imposing a complete or partial lockdown on Saturday and declare an emergency, to combat the spread of coronavirus.⁣⁣

In a densely populated country like Bangladesh, social distancing measures to prevent COVID-19 is a tall order. Especially in the slums in Dhaka and Chattagram, where millions of people live in extremely close quarters, as well as Cox’s Bazaar, the site of Rohingya refugee camps, making it near impossible to enforce social distancing. Most residents are also unaware of the scope of the threat of the disease, as seen when tens of thousands gathered in prayer in wake of the outbreak. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The demographic and a shortage of testing kits call into question the accuracy of the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19, which currently stands at 24 cases and 2 deaths.⁣⁣
