Anti-India protests and clashes erupt in Kashmir as Indian soldiers shoot a young man dead. Indian Forces claim they shot the victim “when the car didn’t stop despite warning shots”. They feared an attack as a military convoy was passing at the time.
The victim’s father denies this account stating that his son did not drive through any checkpoints, and soldiers first stopped him and then shot him. A witness also attests to this: “He was killed deliberately. He did no wrong.”
News of his death triggered hundreds of men and women to come to the streets chanting: “Go India, go back” and “We want freedom”. Since this, authorities have implemented an internet shut down, a common tactic used by India to silence those in the region.
